recharge: beyond the bars re-entry game (new york, ny)  //  interactive game design

project: the app version RECHARGE Beyond the Bars Re-entry Game. The card game is an interactive card deck of 60+ thoughtful questions and interactions which provide an opportunity for incarcerated folks to reflect on their lives and many aspects of their incarceration experience with one another, and with their family members and friends in a safe and fun way while they bond and grow in understanding, connection and empathy. The game is exclusively and currently available to 150 correctional facilities throughout the United States for incarcerated folks to play during visitations with friends and family via NCIC Inmate Communications system (launched Dec 2021). The game has been played over 90,000 by incarcerated individuals since it’s launch. It will soon be available in Spanish for every prison in Puerto Rico and beyond.

my role: design consultant, creative director/lead designer

to do: design a simple interactive RECHARGE Beyond the Bars Re-entry Game cards and interface. The game cards are communication and activity prompts helping promote healing, promote healthy reintegration back to society and reconnection with friends and family. I was tasked by game creator/founder and practicing psychotherapist Leslie Robinson to redesign and adapt the physical card game for digital application and worked with Focus Games to bring the game to life.
